Swimming banned in waterfalls, quarries in South Goa district

Prohibition order will be in force for 60 days

South Goa district Magistrate Asvin Chandru on Sunday prohibited swimming in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes and other water bodies until further orders in the jurisdiction of South Goa District. 

The order has come into force with effect from Sunday and shall remain in operation for a period of 60 days  unless withdrawn earlier.

In the order issued  under section 144 of the Cr P C, the South district Magistrate took cognizance of the incidents of drowning reported in the past in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes and other water bodies in the South Goa District and as such swimming in these water poses dangerous risk to the life of people.

Saying it is necessary to take exigent measures in this regard so as to prevent any danger to human life or safety and security of general public, Chandru stated that he is satisfied that the circumstances do not permit the serving in due time, of the notices individually upon the persons against whom this order is directed and hence issued the order under section 144 of the Cr P C.

The order has further directed the local Police Inspector and the Mamlatdar to maintain vigil in their jurisdiction and enforce the order.

Failure to comply with the order shall be liable for penal action under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code and other relevant provisions of law in force.
