MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council has come under the lens of the South Goa district Disaster Management Authority over the demolition of an unsafe building in the heart of the commercial capital.
Even as the South Goa District Disaster Management Authority has issued order to local bodies to take up monsoon preparedness works in their respective jurisdiction, the office of the South Goa Collector has sought compliance report from the Margao Municipal Council on the order issued by the Authority in November last year for the demolition of an unsafe building.
The correspondence received from the Collector’s office has put the MMC technical section in a tight spot. Reason. That despite the district Disaster Management Authority issuing an order for the demolition of the “unsafe” building, a shop on the building's ground floor has been running a business in the premises.
With the office of the district Collector seeking a compliance report on the demolition of the unsafe building, a senior civic official said the MMC may not have any option than to send the request for the demolition of the unsafe building to the demolition squad.
For, the office of the South Goa district Collector had recently issued a circular to all the deputy Collectors and other agencies not to keep pending demolition orders passed by the authorities and upheld by the Courts.
