Mapusa Police arrested one person after alert residents caught the person red-handed while attempting to commit theft of vehicles even as two of his accomplices managed to give them the slip on Monday morning.
The accused Omkar Chari (19) a resident of Valpoi was apprehended after locals handed him over to the police.
According to residents of Ward 5 in Duler-Mapusa, the three accused entered the compound of one of the local Uday Sawant from Dangui Colony and were attempting to rob the car and a bike from his compound.
“They were armed with spanners, screwdrivers and other equipment to dismantle parts of the vehicles. We managed to catch hold of one of them while the other two ran away,” a resident informed.
The councilor of Ward 5, Shashank Narvekar informed that at least 15 cases of thefts of parts of cars and bikes besides petrol was reported from the area in the last few months.
Mapusa Police has identified the other two accused as Yogesh Mollekar of Valpoi and Krishnajit Naik of Marcel who are the accomplices of Omkar Chari.
Police are on lookout for them. An offense has been registered against the three under Sections 143, 147, 324 r/w149 of the IPC. Further investigation is in progress.
