With a prayer on his lips and a hope of not contracting Covid infection, Nilesh Gadekar took the vaccine jab amid the media glare on Saturday morning at Asilo, Mapusa.

The 37-year-old health attendant from Mayem never knew that he would be the first person to take the vaccine in the Mapusa hospital, but admitted he was initially nervous.

“I am fine. There is no problem at all. There was slight pain while taking the vaccine but now all that is gone,” a triumphant Gadekar said. He has been a health worker for the last 13 years and has completed five years at the Asilo.

He disclosed that one of his colleagues at work coaxed him to take the vaccine and he readily agreed to do so.

“We have been handling patients during the peak of the pandemic but took all the necessary precautions while doing our duty. Every time I touched a patient, I used the sanitiser and washed my hands regularly,” he revealed.  He said he was quite elated as the vaccine will keep him away from the risk of contracting the deadly virus. Besides his wife and kids, Gadekar looks after both his parents at home.
