Tomorrow March 10 will be a very important day for Goa and Goans as the results of the state elections held on February 14 will be declared.
Many have compared these elections to the Opinion Poll with regards to its importance. While the state would do well to have one single party getting a majority, the exit polls have predicted a hung house.
If the prediction turns out to be true, then the two major parties, the Congress and the BJP would be looking for support of independent elected representatives to form the government.
The Congress, once bitten twice shy, should take utmost care to see that the fiasco of 2017 is not repeated when ten of its legislators switched sides.
The Congress party has reportedly said that it will choose its legislature party leader within minutes of declaration of the poll results.
To the Congress Party’s advantage it must be said that there are not as many aspirants for the Chief Minister’s post from within the party as there were in the 2017 elections.
However the new entries to the party and leaders of the alliance partner could be looking for plum positions in the government. It would be desirable for the party observers to send feelers on the most likely leader of the legislature party. This will prevent last-minute heart-breaks and probably a repeat of the fiasco that took place after the last elections. Indecisiveness on electing a legislature party leader had cost the Congress a shot at power in 2017.
