Let's hope Modi's jobs promise becomes reality

This is with reference to the report, "PM in mission mode, orders 10 lakh jobs in 18 months - The Goan Everyday, June 15 2022." Fantastic piece of news that -- something to look forward to for the unemployed! Various government departments and ministries have been instructed to provide 10 lakh jobs within the next 18 months. Great, shouldn't we say? The timing is important! As the reports says, the next general elections are due in 2024 and so, the government will have something to counter the opposition criticism over the unemployment issue.

Incidentally, the two crore jobs promised in 2014 still seems to be a mirage. On the contrary, crores of jobs have been lost over the years. And, perhaps, there may be thousands who must have already completed the selection process and are still awaiting employment. Without wading into controversy however, let's hope that this time around this promise becomes a reality.

Govt is playing with fire with Agnipath scheme

The Agnipath scheme supposed to make the Indian army future combat ready and capable of the full spectrum of conflict is fraught with danger.  If young militarily trained conscripts are released after four years of service, apart from it’s impact on the morale of the standing army personnel, it could create a huge threat to law and order especially when there are not enough jobs to absorb them.
