Goa police has reportedly launched a new initiative to enhance fitness of its officers by introducing five Body Mass Index (BMI) measuring machines in order to ensure that responsibilities are not compromised while maintaining their health as well. It is true that the health and well-being of the police personnel is vital for efficiency and effectiveness of the police force. Generally, police officers with greater cardiorespiratory fitness have more stamina, less fatigue and fewer injuries. Officers who are fit are more likely to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations, ensuring the safety of both the public and themselves and project an image of confidence and professionalism. Police officers must be prepared to take immediate physical action with little or no warning. Police personnel in Goa have to function under trying circumstances. At times they have to be on their feet for long hours and under the scorching sun. Another aspect is that police personnel who seem to be old should be given tasks which are physically less taxing till their retirement. A robust and healthy police force is the need of the hour to crackdown on crime.
