In the last few years it has become a trend in Goa by private, semi-government and government organisations/departments to hire people on contract basis.
The tenure varies from a few months to a year and may be extended at the whims and fancies of the employers. Even school teachers and faculty in colleges and university are employed on contract basis and a lump sum amount is paid.
The system of having contract workers is profitable to the employers since there is no obligation to pay provident funds, medical expenses, travel allowances, etc and the number of holidays is restricted.
Yet, the working hours and the workload are the same as regular employees. While the latter get a handsome salary the contracted people are most time paid a pittance.
Unfortunately, even the salary is not paid on time and every month including for the teaching staff. The accountant would say, either seriously or in jest, that contract workers mostly being locals must be staying with his/her family or needs would be met by the parents or you are a bachelor/spinster etc.
The employers need to show compassion and justice towards their workers and pay them on time, by the first week of every month, just as they themselves get paid by the government or draw fat salaries and perks from their companies and corporate offices.
