The recent incident in Maina-Curtorim police station jurisdiction, where a 35-year-old man allegedly sexually assaulted an 85-year-old woman inside her own home, has sent shockwaves across Goa. The State has witnessed multiple instances of sexual abuse, including crimes against minors, showing that women from ages 8 to 80 are being targeted. This raises a pressing question: how safe are women in the state? Public spaces too are fraught with danger, as women frequently report being stalked, harassed and touched inappropriately. While laws exist, their enforcement often falls short, and the lack of visible deterrents emboldens perpetrators. Policing must become more proactive, with increased patrolling, quicker response times and stronger community engagement. Awareness campaigns and gender sensitivity education must also be prioritised. Women deserve to feel safe in their homes, on the streets and in workplaces. Ultimately, women’s safety in Goa reflects the values of society.
