Caution must while digging roads

It must be said that digging of roads and pavements is being carried out not only in the capital city of Panaji as part of ‘Smart City’ works. Roads and pavements are being dug at several places across the State ostensibly for underground cabling works.

Obviously this presents great inconvenience to the citizens which is unavoidable. Citizens have to bear the inconvenience with the hope that the work will be completed in quick time and all the dug up areas will be restored at the earliest.

However, the digging of roads and pavements should not prove dangerous for members of the public. The pavements and roads which have been dug up need to have proper cautionary signs warning the pedestrians of the impending danger.

The dug-up areas should be cordoned-off with a tape surrounding it. These precautionary measures are not adhered to at several places.

It seems absolutely necessary for the contractors carrying out the work to put up cautionary signs and cordon-off areas of the road and pavement that have been dug-up.

At night lights should be put up and reflector paint used wherever necessary, especially where there are no street-lights along the road.
