For many Goans, the Congress may still appear to be the more acceptable alternative to the BJP. However, if the party wishes to regain public trust ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, it must first address some difficult but necessary questions about its own past and present functioning in the state.
Over the years, Congress had opportunities to enact stronger safeguards for Goa’s land, environment and identity, but failed to do so decisively. It also bears responsibility for issues such as the growth of illegal settlements, which are now being politically leveraged by the BJP. More recently, there appears to be a troubling contradiction between Congress leaders opposing controversial projects in some parts of Goa while remaining silent, or allegedly permitting similar developments elsewhere.
There are also concerns over the party’s lack of visible support to certain local protests, irregularities in ticket distribution, and the reappointment of leadership associated with earlier failures and internal divisions. The 2022 election outcome and subsequent defections should have prompted serious introspection.
Unless Congress demonstrates sincerity, consistency and accountability, it risks once again weakening the very alternative people are hoping for.
