Around a year ago, a live drone demonstration for spraying pesticides and fertilizers, held in the presence of the then Punjab chief minister, highlighted the potential of technology in modern agriculture. While the initiative was timely, the Department of Agriculture's recent demonstration in Chinchinim, at nearly the same location, raised questions about its purpose. Repeating the exercise without visible follow-up or wider implementation added little value.
The real success story lies in the work of Fr George and Adv Agnelo Furtado, whose efforts have inspired farmers to reclaim fallow land, cultivate cash crops, restore irrigation canals, and establish a Farmers' Club that has revitalised agriculture in the area. Their achievements have earned appreciation from several organisations, and P C Trust has sought official recognition for Adv Agnelo Furtado through Minister Shirodkar.
Agriculture advances through sustained action, not repeated demonstrations. Recognising grassroots leaders who translate ideas into lasting results would encourage more meaningful progress than ceremonial showcases of technology.
