Yuri Alemao, Leader of the Opposition, and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai proposed commemorating Opinion Poll Day on 16th January annually as a state function, a significant idea supported by many Goans. Goa, liberated from the Portuguese in 1961, held the Opinion Poll on 16 January 1967, and this year marked its 57th anniversary, known as Goan Identity Day or Goencho Asmitai Dis.
The 1967 slogan ‘Aamka Naka Maharashtrian Shrikhand Puri, Aamchi Goenchi Xitt ani Koddi Bori’ reflects the cultural battle won to keep Goa distinct from Maharashtra. If merged, Goa would have lost its identity, language, and cultural festivals. Leaders who fought for Goa, especially Dr Jack Sequeira, should be honoured, including a statue in the Goa Assembly Complex. This recognition is essential for preserving Goa’s unique cultural heritage. Goa is a harmonious state where diverse religions coexist peacefully, a legacy that must be protected.
