The Ministry of External Affairs clarified on the 14th Passport Seva Divas that a passport, though issued only to Indian citizens, does not itself confer or prove citizenship. This distinction is important. Fake passports not legitimately issued by the Government of India must be strictly dealt with to safeguard national security and international trust.
Today, Indians must produce multiple documents to prove identity and citizenship. The growing number of identity proofs creates confusion, financial burden and scope for exploitation. Recent statements by some ministers have further caused confusion and embarrassment internationally. Citizens are recognised worldwide mainly through their passports, which not only facilitate travel but also strongly establish their Indian identity. Leaders must communicate responsibly to preserve India’s image abroad. Simplifying documentation procedures will protect citizens from exploitation and restore confidence in government services.
