Panchayats must uphold interest of villagers

The Saligao Village Panchayat has issued a stop-work notice to the promoter of a mega housing project at Bairo-Alto, Nigvaddo, directing that construction cease immediately following sustained protests by local residents over alleged irregularities.

The panchayat has also scheduled a site inspection and inquiry on July 20 at 11 am, directing the project proponent to remain present. The action comes after residents alleged that the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department, the panchayat, the local MLA and other authorities had failed to inspect the site despite repeated complaints.

Residents have expressed hope that the inspection will be genuine and not merely an attempt to defuse public anger. They have also raised concerns over the growing number of large housing projects in Saligao, alleging that some have received support despite existing problems such as inadequate garbage management, water supply and electricity. Villagers have urged the panchayat to uphold public interest and ensure the project proceeds only if it fully complies with all legal and planning norms.
