Firefighters from the Valpoi Fire Station reportedly received over 40 emergency calls over the weekend, most of them related to trees uprooted by strong winds and heavy rains. When we hear the word "firefighter," we usually imagine brave men battling blazing fires. However, firefighters perform far more tasks than firefighting duties. They are true emergency responders who handle a wide range of life-saving operations. During the monsoon season, their workload increases significantly as they respond to uprooted trees blocking roads, collapsed houses, landslides, and flood-related emergencies. They also rescue animals that fall into wells, recover bodies from rivers and ponds in cases of drowning or suicide, and provide assistance during accidents and other emergencies. Regardless of the time of day or the severity of the weather, firefighters answer every emergency call without hesitation. They are a multi-tasking force. They are like angels in uniform. However we tend to take their service for granted. Despite their invaluable contribution to society, firefighters often work under challenging conditions. The government should recognize their sacrifices by providing better facilities and welfare measures for them and their families.
