Despite the fact that civic bodies in the state have been emphasizing on door-to-door collection of garbage, people still dump dry garbage in open spaces and along the roadside.
It is observed that people generally dump the dry garbage in the vicinity of electric transformers. As a result of this, at several places the electricity transformer spots have turned into garbage dumping sites. This is taking place despite the fact that there are some transit stations for dumping of dry waste from where the garbage is lifted by the municipal trucks.
Dumping of garbage near electricity transformers can prove very dangerous. The dry garbage can catch fire in the hot sun and in several instances this has led to the electricity transformer being destroyed in the fire. The garbage also causes inconvenience and can prove risky for the linesmen when they have to undertake any repair work as the garbage could contain broken glass pieces.
Regular maintenance of transformers is necessary for uninterrupted power supply. It is understood that despite several appeals by the authorities, people continue dumping garbage near the electricity transformers. To prevent people from dumping garbage at such spots it seems necessary to cordon off the electricity transformer by putting a wire-mesh around it.
A sign-board warning people of dumping the garbage at the spot also needs to be put up at the site.
