Goa is renowned for its scenic beauty, lush greenery, rivers, and waterfalls. However, these natural attractions are increasingly becoming sites of tragedy. According to media reports, around 71 drowning cases have been reported in the state during the last six months. After road accidents, drowning has emerged as a major cause of accidental deaths, particularly among youngsters. Several lives have been lost while swimming or venturing into deep waters at popular locations such as waterfalls and rivers. The recent incident in which three brothers from a Vasco family lost their lives highlights the seriousness of the problem. With the monsoon season underway, trekking and visits to waterfalls are expected to increase. The government should enforce strict safety measures, including temporary restrictions or bans at dangerous locations where water levels and currents pose a significant threat. Schools and colleges should also educate students about water safety and discourage risky adventures.Only strict enforcement and greater public awareness can help prevent such tragic and avoidable loss of life.
