Development should not be measured merely by urbanisation or the spread of concrete. True progress begins with better education, healthcare, sports facilities, cultural programmes, and careful environmental planning. Unplanned development often creates long-term problems, as seen in Delhi's severe air pollution and the recurring floods and water shortages in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. Goa's unique natural beauty and cultural heritage deserve thoughtful protection. Rapid construction, increasing population pressure, poor waste management, and weak enforcement of environmental laws threaten its fragile ecosystem. Illegal commercial activities and pollution by a small section of people, regardless of where they come from, further worsen the situation. The government, municipalities, and panchayats must ensure that development remains sustainable and respects Goa's identity. Many developed nations have shown that economic growth can coexist with environmental conservation through proper planning, clean public spaces, and strict enforcement of civic rules. Goa should follow a similar path by strengthening its basic institutions and protecting its environment. Sustainable development today will ensure a better quality of life for future generations.
