Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the government and the public towards the urgent need for water harvesting. According to the latest prediction of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this year's rainfall is expected to be below average. This raises serious concerns about water availability for drinking, agriculture, and daily household use.
Every year, a huge quantity of rainwater is allowed to flow into rivers and the sea without being conserved. If immediate steps are not taken, many villages and towns may face acute water shortages in the coming months. The government should make rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings, revive old ponds and lakes through desilting, construct check dams, and encourage rooftop rainwater harvesting. Public awareness campaigns should also be launched to educate people about the importance of conserving every drop of water. Water is a precious natural resource, and its conservation is the responsibility of every citizen. Timely action today will help prevent a severe water crisis tomorrow.
