Alarming state of security in Goa

It’s been almost a month since the murder of jeweller Swapnil Walke in broad daylight and cases of robberies, break-ins continue to plague the State.

It is obvious to note that law-enforcement resources are stretched and it becomes easy for the general public to blame the apathy on behalf of law-enforcement on account of shoddy investigation and failure to nab the culprits.

It is noteworthy to mention that a vast majority of the Goan population residing in the State consists of elderly senior citizens whose progeny tend to live outside the State and even abroad owing to sparse opportunities. These elderly folks are more vulnerable to break-ins and home invasions by criminals.

Steps must be taken to mitigate this threat and it is the duty of the community to get involved so as to find a solution.

One such way to deter criminals and would-be burglars is be to

install loud security alarms. One must not forget that it is mandatory by law to install fire protection equipment at most commercial establishments and residences, but why not security alarm systems to protect the inhabitants and the workers in such establishments.

Another way would be to install CCTV cameras at high risk areas in a concealed manner so that evidence could be gathered against potential criminals. For this purpose people should set aside their petty differences and come together and invest jointly in creating a citizen

web of security and also liaison with law enforcement so that we can make our Goa safe like it once was.

We the citizens must be the light and lead the change.
