The Government of Goa must promptly suspend or prohibit the rent-a-cab services in response to the alarming rise in fatal road accidents involving these vehicles. The majority of these incidents involve domestic tourists, unfamiliar with Goan roads, who hire these vehicles for sightseeing, recklessly endangering innocent lives. This casual approach to driving, akin to unguided car training sessions, has led to chaos and tragedy on our roads.
To mitigate this risk, the government should prioritize enhancing the public transport system, long neglected and in dire need of improvement. Furthermore, it’s imperative to restrict domestic tourists from hiring and driving rent-a-cab vehicles, as they often contribute to congestion and confusion on already crowded Goan roads. Many domestic tourists arrive with intentions focused on excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, and participation in late-night parties, often engaging in reckless behaviour such as dancing on vehicles or driving on beaches with doors open, exacerbating the road hazards.
Given the ineffectiveness of enforcing traffic laws and imposing fines, despite rhetoric about emulation of foreign models, it is evident that the current system, marred by corruption and complacency within the Traffic cell and government, cannot adequately address these issues. Therefore, the discontinuation or abolition of the rent-a-cab service is necessary to safeguard lives and restore order on Goan roads.
