A disconcerting pattern of road mishaps that has emerged of late has seen six tragic deaths within a span of the past two days. The traffic police are probably at wits end as to how to stop this increase in the number of fatal accidents on the Goan roads. While the police can only advise the road-users and impose penalties whenever required, it is for the vehicular drivers to take absolute care while driving/riding on the roads. One cannot blame the officials and the government every time there is a fatal road accident. If one drives/rides a vehicle recklessly, not observing traffic rules and at high speed an accident is bound to happen. The new roads, flyovers, bridges which have come up in the state as a result of development have given the road-users broad and smooth roads. Hence speeding on these roads is always tempting. Of course bad roads and unscientific road engineering contributes to the increase in the number of accidents. However, ultimately safety on the roads is in one’s own hands. Road rage will take us nowhere. Defensive driving will.
