Ensure reasonable fares on taxi meters

With respect  to  the news report '9,366 taxis have installed meters: Govt to High Court' (TGE June 23) , I would like to state that had it not been for the timely intervention and directives of the High court of Bombay in Goa, the mandatory fixing of digital fare taxi meters on taxis in Goa would have dragged on indefinitely. Although the first milestone has been crossed, it is only half the battle won by the Goa govt against the hard hitting, adamant and belligerent taxi operators who have called the shots for years, and refused to fix meters and charge as per meter readings. Credit also goes to the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) for their sustained campaign and contempt petitions in the court for the speedy implementation of taxi meters. It is now up to the State Transport Department to ensure that taxis charge fares as per meter readings as well as to make taxi fares affordable to the public. As of today, taxis are known to charge arbitrarily without the use of meters.
