The 2022 polls for the Goa Legislative Assembly are truly done and dusted. Now all eyes are on government formation. All said and done in a democratic set-up there will always be winners and losers. However, the biggest winner is democracy and the smooth organization of the electoral process. Now with the die having been cast as far as government formation is concerned, the focus needs to shift to good governance. Of course, not every candidate who has tasted success at the polls can be in the ruling dispensation. They will obviously have to occupy the seats meant for
members of the opposition parties in the assembly. However, their responsibility does not diminish in comparison with those occupying the treasury benches.
A strong and robust opposition is the true essence of a vibrant democracy.
Sad to say in the past the opposition parties in Goa did not work as per the expectations of the citizens. This time around there should be an effective opposition party led by a capable and a firebrand ‘Leader of the Opposition’.
The main role of the opposition parties is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. Besides the ruling party, the opposition is equally responsible for upholding the best interest of the people. The success of democracy depends to a great extent on the constructive role of the opposition parties. Hopefully, Goa will have a vibrant opposition this time around.
