There has been yet one more accident reported on the Atal Setu bridge. On Monday in an attempt to overtake a truck, an over-speeding four-wheeler reportedly rammed into a divider and broke two electric poles. Fortunately there were no casualties reported however the accident caused a massive traffic jam along the Porvorim-Panaji route. It must be said that of late several accidents have taken place on the bridges, be it the Atal Setu, the Mandovi Bridge or the Zuari Bridge. Almost all these accidents have been attributed to over-speeding. Hence steps to prevent over-speeding are necessary. These include installation of CCTV cameras with night-vision, having speed cameras and adequate police personnel in order to apprehend the violators of traffic rules. Vehicular drivers seldom follow the permissible speed-limit on any bridge which is from 30 to 40 kmph. Potholes on the bridge road are another reason for the accidents. The road dividers on the bridges need to be of a specified height so that speeding vehicles do not jump them. One should not overtake on a bridge and at places where overtaking is prohibited.
