It was nice to know that Road Safety Committees observed a road safety programme on 23rd February 2024. It is also nice to know that all 27 police stations across the State have been given strict instructions to have a road accident analysis team to ensure that accidents are not repeated at that spot. It was also nice to hear that now the panchayats and municipalities must go a step higher by appointing experts to head these Road Safety Committees.
But sadly, Goa has lost many precious lives and devastated several families because of safety committees’ lackadaisical attitude. I have brought to the notice of the local traffic police and panchayat the illegal parking of tourist buses in a no parking zone at Ditoza Circle, Gauravaddo, Calangute, followed by three accidents reported on Emergency No. 112 with no punitive action taken by the Calangute Traffic Police.
Sadly, I guess they are waiting for someone to die there before some action is initiated. Although the Calangute Panchayat Safety Committee has indeed taken up the issue in the recently concluded Gram Sabha meeting on public safety, it remains only on paper as always.
