The destruction of Panaji city under the Smart City project is complete, it seems, as there are no visible signs of further works in progress or repairs to the city’s badly battered, sunken and and water-logged roads, that are causing a lot of inconvenience and danger to residents and motorists.
As per reports, show-cause notices have been served to four contractors of the project for incomplete works, delay, and poor workmanship. It is therefore hoped that stringent action is taken by the concerned authorities to penalise the contractors for the crores of rupees spent uselessly on sub-standard work and delay in completion, which have caused untold misery and havoc to the city and people of Goa.
Contractors cannot be let off the hook easily by merely terminating their contract and awarding the contract to new contractors. This will further increase the cost of the project. Instead, errant contractors should be fined asked to repair the damage at their own cost.
