A devastating head-on collision between two scooters in Kasarvrane in Pernem, on Wednesday resulted in a tragic death of a young woman. This is reportedly the third accident at Kasarvarne and second fatality this month. Incidentally in both cases the two-wheeler rider’s helmet cracked. This reiterates the need to use helmets of standard quality having an ISI mark. Also known as BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification, ISI helmets are considered safe and legal. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made ISI helmets mandatory. If the helmet does not bear ISI marking, it will invite a fine of Rs. 1,000. Moreover proper strapping of the helmet is vital. Non-strapping can also invite a fine of Rs. 1,000. Half helmet is also not allowed as it does not provide optimal protection. It should be a full-face helmet. It is vital to replace a helmet after a maximum of five years as the foam used inside, which protects the head, is worn out. Two-wheelers riders usually wear helmets in order to hoodwink the cops and not to protect themselves in case of an accident. This mindset should change.
