Going by the recent happenings in Goa, it appears that another political drama is about to unfold on the likes of that in Maharashtra . It is also observed that rebellions, defections and party hopping have been happening with increasing frequency ever since the BJP assumed power in 2014 at the Centre and in several States. Whether politicians defect to the ruling BJP to save their skins or for other reasons is a moot point. It is very sad to see democratically elected govts in several states being pulled down due to the machinations of conniving and disgruntled elected members who hanker after positions of power and pelf, rather than their commitments to serve the people who elected them. It is time therefore for the Election Commission to step in with a new law to replace the antiquated anti-defection law, by making it mandatory for all elected members to complete their term in office. All elected members who are unhappy or unable to function in the party they represent, should gracefully resign and remain out of office till the next elections.
