As a step in the right direction the Gujarat government has reportedly banned unauthorized white LED headlights in all types of vehicles. These have a blinding effect on the oncoming traffic users while also distracting their attention. According to the legislation in order to get enough light output one would need a minimum of 15 watts. This would make sense for a filament bulb however an LED would produce an immense amount of light at 15 watts. Most cars, bought today, will have the option of LED headlights. When fitted by the manufacturer, they're perfectly legal, and while they may appear brighter than halogen bulbs, are within legal limits for dazzle. However using an LED replacement bulb is both illegal and the glare from these lights can temporarily blind drivers. LED lights have become popular due to their energy efficiency and longevity. While LED lights are not explicitly banned in India, their use in vehicles is regulated. For instance, LED headlights cannot be brighter than 3,000 lumens. In Goa several vehicles are seen using LED headlights. Whether their use is within prescribed norms needs to be checked by the traffic police.
