As the Mopa airport gets ready to receive its first flights, the question mark over its name keeps getting sharper. The names of two former chief ministers have been suggested. While it would be great to name the airport after Goan politicians who were very influential during their times in office, would it be too much of an offence to ignore them? Why not a personality from another field, or better, why not name it after an aspect about Goa that is very unique and renowned? If given a chance, why not conduct a vote over it? Let the public suggest the names to be put to vote.
While there is no doubt that politicians influence day-to-day life immensely, other prominent people have to be given consideration. Just for an example, the airport can be named an abbreviation of the names of the villages that were moved for its construction. Hopefully, the politicians will come to a consensus on a name soon, because wasting energy on fighting over naming the airport is not worth it when there are bigger challenges facing Goa.
