Goan youth are opting for jobs in the UK or on cruise ships instead of taking up traditional farming. This trend has led to migration and demographic changes. Historically, limited opportunities and poverty drove this migration, but Goa has since progressed, developing infrastructure and industries. Despite growth in farming and fishing, a labour shortage persists with employers relying on migrants. Rather than blaming migrants, locals should acknowledge their own role in this trend, having utilized Portuguese passports and having sought work abroad. To break this cycle, we need to rethink our approach to UK and cruise ship jobs.
