Every State in India has its own unique identity, culture, and language, and we should respect and take pride in each other’s state languages. Konkani is the official language of Goa—our 'Mai Bhasha' and 'Rajya Bhasha'. We fail to understand why certain groups are creating unnecessary noise in Goa by demanding Marathi, the language of Maharashtra, be made the second official language of Goa. We Goans have one mother tongue—Konkani—and we do not want to be labeled with another state’s mother language. While we respect the people of Maharashtra and their language Marathi, giving Marathi an official place in Goa is neither appropriate nor acceptable. Political mafias, along with some leaders and their groups, seem intent on turning Goa into a part of Maharashtra. Maharashtra is already a large state—why eye a small state like Goa? Most Goan Hindus respect Marathi, but that respect does not mean they hate their mother tongue Konkani. It is important to remember that the languages and identities of both states cannot be merged. We urge everyone to stand united to protect Goa’s language, culture, and identity.
