The reported collapse of the Director General of Police, Goa, during the Independence Day celebrations in Panaji is a reminder that even carefully organized national functions can take a toll on the health. It should also prompt us to spare a thought for the hundreds of students and young participants who take part in such programmes. National celebrations involve weeks of preparation. Students participating in parades, cultural programs, drills and other events often attend repeated practices, sometimes in demanding conditions. The physical strain of such preparation can be considerable, particularly during Goa's hot and humid weather. The actual day of the function can be even more challenging. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, dizziness and fainting are genuine risks, especially for those who have not consumed enough fluids or who may have an underlying health condition. It is therefore prudent that the health and safety of participants receive as much attention as the ceremonial arrangements. Students should not be compelled to continue rehearsals or remain in formation if they feel unwell.
