Parish Youth, Nuvem edged past a fighting Curtorim Gymkhana 1-0 to win 33rd Strikers Trophy football tournament organised at St John Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Sunday.
In a thrilling encounter watched by a large Sunday crowd, Nuvem striker Albino Pereira netted the precious winner in the second session. Earlier, Nuvem missed a sitter through Stephen Colaco while Myson Fernandes wasted a chance for Curtorim. Nuvem made the first breaklthrough in the 50th minute when Albino Pereira pounced on an error by Curtorim goalkeepper Johnson Bhagat, who charged out of the area to cut out a Ceder Colaco pass but the fleet-footed Nuvem striker dashed in and put the ball in the empty nylons. The strike eventually proved to be the match winner.
Cortorim got an opportunity to score an equaliser in the last minute of the match but Mackwill Fernandes blasted over the cross piece. The chief guest, Sharon Alemao, gave away the trophy in the presence of Benaulim sarpanch Diella Pereira, Colva sarpanch Anthony Mam Fernandes, Benaulim deputy sarpanch Menino De Bandar, Xavier Pereira, Arnald Da Costa, GFA executive committee member, Fr Luis Pinto, Reginaldo Ramola, Babush Coelho, Protty Fernandes and Andrew Ferrao. Meanwhile, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco also made a surprise appearance and set on the bench of Curtorim Gymkhana and watched the finals. PY Nuvem were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while Curtorim Gymkhana received a prize of Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
