Girija Devi Dessai revelled in a historic feat as her club Sirvodem Sports Club won the 4th GFA Vedanta Women’s League on Wednesday.
The head coach of Sirvodem saw her team seal the title in style with a huge 8-0 win over Compassion FC at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, topping the league with 28 points in an unbeaten run ahead of second-placed FC Goa.
Speaking to 'The Goan Everyday', Dessai said: “We created a new history for Sirvodem Sports Club. I am happy to win the league title for the first time as a coach.
“I am happy to be among this group of players, officials and technical staff. Our goal is to win all the tournaments we participate in,” Dessai said.
The title helped Sirvodem clinch a direct entry in the final round of Indian Women’s League (IWL) 2020-21. The final round of the national tournament will be held in Bhubaneshwar from April 23 to May 27.
The coach thanked all the club’s fans and vowed to continue the good work at the national level too. “Special thanks to the fans of Sirvodem Sports Club, who supported the team with full force throughout the season. We promise to continue working to make them happy and win more championships for the club.”
Meanwhile, Covan Lawrence, the assistant coach, also lauded the efforts of the team.
“The team had an excellent campaign and the title was well-deserved. We had a strong level and achieved results with good football and created records en route to the title,” Lawrence said.
He pointed out that the technical level this season was distinguished by strength and excitement among the teams and hailed the constructive cooperation and continued partnership between the Goa Football Association and the clubs for delivering a successful edition of the league in the difficult pandemic times.
“We always look forward to continued cooperation and combined efforts to achieve growth of women’s football in Goa,” Lawrence said.
