PANAJI

The Goa Football Association (GFA) has adopted a series of key resolutions aimed at safeguarding football infrastructure, strengthening governance and giving players a formal voice in the administration of the sport in the state.

At an Executive Committee meeting, the GFA resolved to make formal representations to the Corporation of the City of Panaji, the Panaji MLA and Chief Minister regarding the future of the historic Campal Ground. The association reiterated its commitment to preserving the venue, which has long been regarded as one of Goa's iconic football grounds.

GFA president Dr Caitano Fernandes said the association had consistently pursued the issue since 2023 through repeated representations to GSUDA and the concerned minister, adding that efforts to protect the ground had been ongoing well before the matter gained wider public attention.

The Executive Committee also approved the implementation of the All India Football Federation's new Constitution within the GFA by October 2026. A draft amended constitution will be circulated among members before a Special General Meeting is convened to adopt the changes. The process is expected to be completed by October 20, subject to the formation of the GFA Players Association.

"We hope to be the first State Association in India to amend its Constitution in line with the provisions of the National Sports Governance Act and the AIFF Constitution," Dr Fernandes said.

In another significant move, the GFA resolved to invite applications for the formation of the GFA Players Association, which will provide footballers with a recognised platform to represent their collective interests and contribute to the development of the game in Goa. Eligibility criteria, timelines and application details will be announced soon.

Former India international Maymol Rocky, along with GFA Executive Committee members Sanjiv Nagvenkar and Cosme Oliveira, has been entrusted with coordinating the formation of the Players Association.

Reaffirming the association's commitment to good governance and football development, Dr Fernandes said players remained the most important stakeholders in Goan football and expressed hope that the Players Association would be established at the earliest.
