Hosts Sporting Club of Davorlim were crowned champions of 11th Davorlim Cup inter village football tournament organised by Sporting Club of Davorlim, beating Margao Sports Club 2-1 in an exciting final at Panchayat ground, Davorlim on Sunday.
Margao were on the attack from the early minutes of the match. Christopher Borges’ snap shot was parried away by the rival goalkeeper. Abhay Shetty then unleashed a snap shot but it hit the post much to the disappointment of Davorlim supporters in the 16th minute. Couple of minutes later, Margao Sports Club came close to breaking the deadlock when striker Necil Pinto picked up the ball from Velton D’Souza but his try missed the mark narrowly.
At the other end, Abhay Shetty’s strike hit the Margao post. Minutes later, Necil Pinto took control of the ball from Velton D’Souza and his lob inside the rival penalty box found Agnelo Noronha, whose glancing header missed the mark narrowly. Sporting Club of Davorlim broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when central defender Jordal Gomes sent a blistering shot that beat the rival goalkeeper, off a pass from Abhay Shetty in the 26th minute.
Post resumption, Sporting Club of Davorlim continued to enjoy domination over their rivals. Agnelo Colaco put the issue beyond doubt when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish. Margao Sports Club woke from their slumber and scored a consolation goal through Cliff Barretto at the fag end.
Sporting Club of Davorlim were richer by Rs 40,000 and a glittering trophy while Margao Sports Club had to settle for a prize of Rs 30,000. Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro and Fr Domnic Noronha, Chaplain of Our Lady of Rosary chapel, Davorlim, and other dignitaries.
