Striker Anson D' Souza netted a fine brace as Candolim Sports Club beat Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 to enter the last-four of the Jaju Memorial Trophy football tournament at St John Baptist ground, Dando Benaulim on Monday.
Curtorim were a disjointed lot throughout the match with only midfielder Nickson Castanha providing the sparkle. Candolim midfielders Aniket Naik and Rajat Chopdekar worked tirelessly to gain control of the proceedings.
Candolim deservedly went ahead in the 26th minute when the Curtorim defence failed to intercept a high ball from the left by Sanket Jotkar only for the unmarked Anson to nod in past rival goalkeeper Johnson Bhogot.
Curtorim showed some glimpses of a comeback and almost got the equaliser but Nilester Silveira's shot from a yard out struck Candoilm defender Melvin Lobo and bounced over the crosspiece. Nickson and Milagres Fernandes made some forays for Curtorim but their striker Joy Hilario was unable to get a clear look at the goal as Candoilm stoppers Melvin and Bhavesh Candolkar put up a solid defence.
Candolim made the issue safe two minutes before the close when Anson took a fine through pass from Aniket to cut past Rhys Dias and Johnson Bhogot to push into an empty net.
