Goa's attacking midfielder Necio Maristo Fernandes said that Goa will have to be on their guard when they face Services in the summit clash of the 77th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy, in Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday.
"It’s a dream to wear this shirt,” Necio told The Goan. "I know I'm 20 years-old, but things have always happened very quickly for me. It’s my first call-up and I just want to enjoy the moment. What I say to those closest to me is that I can’t stop here. I want to score more and create more records," said the Dempo SC midfielder.
Necio Maristo Fernandes started his career with Dempo Sports Club in various age group and played under Remus Gomes in the initial period and then moved up the ranks where he now comes under Dempo head coach Samir Naik.
The Goan attacking midfielder shared his thought on the team performance so far in the championship.
"I think the team played well, we were ready from day one. Our vision is clear, we want to become champions and so from day one, my boys were prepared well and got the goals. I’m happy with the performances,” said Necio Fernandes.
Necio also brushed off the notion that the team was on the backfoot in the final ten minutes of the match. “I don’t think that way. I believe in planning, scoring and winning. I don’t think we were on the back foot either. The boys knew the importance of 3 points and so they went to defend,” said Necio.
Necio Fernandes who first played for Rosman Cruz Sports Club also acknowledged his father who always supported his sporting pursuit. He described the early years as a “struggle” as he found it extremely hard to consistently get selected for the team. He made his national debut in the National Championship at the age of 20.
When asked further about the summit clash against Services, Necio answered, "We had played against them earlier and beat by 2-1. Services are a good side and we have lot of respect for them and my colleagues understand the importance. We just need to give our best on the pitch."
"Goa are ready to lift title and there is no extra pressure on us," Necio concluded.
