SAG chess coach Sanjay Kavlekar won a bronze medal at the West Zone Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged 2023, which was held in Pune, Maharashtra recently.
The tournament organised by the All India Chess Association for the blind was played according to the Swiss league system in eight rounds. In the final round, Kavlekar drew with top seed Darpan Inani of Gujarat to finish with 6.5 points. Inani won gold while Ashwin Makhwana of Gujarat won silver. There were four players tied with the same number of points, and Kavlekar earned the bronze on a tiebreak basis. The top 17 players from the tournament will represent the West Zone in the AICFB Nationals to be held in February.
FC Goa open trials for U-14 girls team
PANAJI: FC Goa in association with Forca Goa Foundation, the club’s sister concern, will organise a selection camp for girls of the U-14 age group, on Tuesday, January 10. Selected players will earn the opportunity to make it to the FC Goa team. The camp will be held at the Monte de Guirim football ground at Guirim, from 4 pm onwards.
Goa Police beat Black Arrows 2-0
MARGAO: Goa Police beat Black Arrows 2-0 to enter the semifinals of 1st All Goa Veterans Football Tournament 2022-23 at PHQ ground, Panaji. Rohit Mhalogi and Kishore Palkar scored in either half for the Goa Police veterans.
Ex-football international Francis D'Souza was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to Kishore Palkar of Goa Police Veterans (Man of the match), Pobris Colaco of Black Arrows (oldest player), and a memento to the losing team, Black Arrows.
Earlier, Advocate Veterans defeated Siolim Veterans 6-5 via the tiebreaker. Dinesh Kalagutkar scored for Siolim Veterans, whereas Wilbur Menezes netted for Advocate Veterans. In the tiebreaker, Advocate Veterans proved to be better shooters.
