Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim edged past Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim 1-0 to win the U-17 St Joseph Vaz Soccer Cup organised by Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim at Our Lady of Hope Church Chinchinim ground on Monday.
Mount Mary's scored the winner in the 9th minute through Sohil Shaikh. Individual prizes: First scorer of the final - Sohil Shaikh (Mount Mary's), Best defender of the final - Meayfern Rebello (Perpetual Succour Convent), Best midfielder of the final - Fayaz Lathyale (Perpetual Succour Convent), Best goalkeeper of the final - Shawn Viegas (Mount Mary's), Player of the tournament - Om Raiker (Mount Mary's), Best disciplined team - Assumpta Convent.
Fr Jose Antonio Da Costa, the founder of the inter-school St Joseph Vaz football tournament, gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up.
Second Division: UB De Ambaulim post big win
UB De Ambaulim thrashed Carmel Sports Club 6-0 in the GFA Second Division League (South Goa) at Rosary ground, Navelim on Monday.
Ambaulim started off with attacking intent and found an early breakthrough in the 3rd minute when Teron Fernandes scored with a snap shot. Ambaulim continued to press and Anthony Fernandes scored the second in the 32nd minute before Alex Fernandes made it 3-0 in the 37th minute. Ambaulim continued to attack in numbers and Dailon Fernandes netted the fourth in the 43rd minute.
Crossing over, Ambaulim continued in the same vein as Maisilon found the fifth in the 64th minute. In the 69th minute, Maisilon fired home in the 69th minute for the sixth goal. For the first time at a Second Division match, an ambulance was stationed at the ground.
Sao Jose de Areal move into quarterfinals
MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club edged past United Sports Club of Seraulim 5-3 via tiebreaker to move into the quaterfinals of Varca Panchayat Cup football tournament organized by Varca Sports Club on Monday.
The match finished goalless after regulation time. In the tiebreaker, San Jose de Areal scored through Raymond Fernandes,Vellington Faleiro, Tyson Carvalho, Liston D'Costa and Clifford Soares while United Sports Club converted through Senatro Fernandes, Ashley Fernandes and Alaric Da Cunha. Tyson Carvalho of San Jose de Areal was adjudged the Man of the match.
Ground inaugurated at Valpoi
VALPOI: A new ground of the municipality, built at a cost of around Rs 3 crore has been inaugurated at Valpoi. "The sportsmen of Valpoi will benefit greatly from the new ground in the future. In the future, Mishiche Mal will take up the sports complex at Nanus by spending 12 crore," stated Health Minister Vishwajit Rane after inaugurating the ground. "I will strive for (promotion of) sports and wellness clinics. A fund will be available for the municipal sector."
Goa University men's cricket team selection trials
PANAJI: Goa University will conduct selection trials for men's cricket team on Wednesday, January 18 at 3 pm. Students interested in attending the trials may report at Cricket Nets, Don Bosco College, Panaji along with their college identity card, Aadhar Card, birth certificate and playing kit. The West Zone Inter University Cricket Championship for Men is tentatively scheduled from February 1-10 at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Shekhawati University, Sikar, Rajasthan.
