MARGAO
Even as football has been elevated as the official sport in the State, it still lacks the financial wherewithal to boost the sagging spirits of the winners.
So, the winners of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons of the GFA Pro League find themselves left out in the lurch. The winners of this year's edition of the league, Sporting Clube de Goa, romped home to win the title but their joy appeared to be short-lived as the team is yet to receive the coveted prize money associated with the crown. The prize money for the 2019-20 season was Rs 20 lakh.
While the situation may have hit the morale of a section of the football fraternity, the Flaming Oranje are also awaiting the shared prize money for the title of the 2019-20 edition, when they were declared joint winners with Churchill Brothers.
Dempo Sports Club, who won the Under-14 and -16 titles in the First Division, and Betalbatim Sporting Club, Raia Football Club and Velsao Cultural Sports Club, the winners 0f under-16, -14 and -18 in the Second Division respectively, are also yet to receive the prize money.
