The GFA Charity Match left fans on the edge of their seats as Salgaocar FC edged defending Goa Pro League champions Dempo SC 4-3 on penalties to win the season opener at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Sunday.
A fast-paced match was not settled in the regulation time and was decided on penalties. Salgaocar scored each of their shots to secure the win. In the penalty shootout, Samuel Costa, Saurabh Patil, Sidharth Kundaikar and Umang Gaikwad were on target for Salgaocar. Goalkeeper Jason D'Mello made two superb saves to deny Dempo's Necio and Klusner Pereira while Suraj, Pedro Gonsalves and Ariston scored for the Golden Eagles.
Chief guest Shubangi Vaigankar, chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, presented the trophy to the triumphant Salgaocar FC players.
