Young Strikers Benaulim edged past CAC Cansaulim 10-9 via sudden death to enter the quarterfinals of the Jaju Memorial Trophy tournament organised by Young Strikers at St John Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Wednesday.
In a pulsating encounter, Cansaulim led by two goals inside the quarter mark with strikers Selwyn Soares and Shanelee Lucas getting on the scoresheet in the 10th and 12th minutes, respectively. Benaulim were not in the picture until debutant striker Levey Periera's right-footer sailed into the net to reduce the margin.
A minute after the restart, Levy Pereira was in the right place to knock in a fine pass from Ashin Bepari. Thereafter, Benaulim dominated but Nicholas Rodrigues and Meku Cardozo wasted sitters. Benaulim finally got ahead when substitute Alijoy Fernandes' powerful right-footer crashed into the nylons, giving no chance to rival goalkeeper Shane Afonso in the 52nd minute.
Benaulim were cruising towards a win but five minutes before the close, Cansaulim got back on level terms through Elvino Fernandes to set up the tie-breaker. In the penalty shootout, Benaulim netted through Osbourne, Nicholas, Keegan, Jollyton, Levy, Alijoy and Ashin. For Cansaulim, the scores were Elvino, Cidroy, Selvyn, Domnic, Kevin and Shanlee.
State fencing championship from July 15
PANAJI: Warrior Training and Fitness Centre will conduct the State Level Fencing Championship (boys, girls, men and women) on July 15 and 16 at Warrior Training and Fitness Centre, Porvorim. The State Championship will have senior, junior and sub-junior categories and is part of the selection trials to shortlist probable fencers aspiring to participate in the upcoming 37th National Games, Goa.
Open selections will also be held on July 23 at Athletic Stadium Bambolim, at 8 am onwards. Players should register with Warrior Training and Fitness for the State championship before July 10. Guardian Angel win Quepem U-14 TT title
Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem won the Quepem Taluka U-14 Table Tennis Girls Championship, defeating Smt CTN High School, Curchorem 3-0 at Indoor stadium, Borimol, Quepem. The tournament was organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. In the first singles match, Shrisha Naik defeated Pallavi 11-7, 11-4 before Alryshka Collaso prevailed over Anisha 11-0, 11-1. In the third singles match, Jancia Pais defeated Bhakti 11-8, 11-5.
Rotary Club TT at Campal from July 10-15
Rotary Club of Mapuca in association with Goa Table Tennis Association and the Sports Authority of Goa will organise its annual All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament from July 10-15 (3 pm onwards) at Indoor Stadium, Campal, Panaji. The tournament has categories of Under-11, -13, -15, -17, and -19 in girls/boys singles and men’s and women’s singles. The entries are to be submitted at bit.ly/rotarytt2023 latest by July 8.
