In an increasingly globalised world the strength of Portuguese nation lies not just within our borders, but in the vast and diverse communities of Portuguese citizens who have made their homes abroad.

These past two weeks marked a historic moment for the Portuguese diaspora in the UK—particularly among the Goan community—during a heartfelt campaign visit by the Portugal’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries José Manuel Fernandes of the Aliança Democrática (PPD/PSD–CDS/PP).

As the Portuguese Advisory Councillor for the UK and Ireland, it was my privilege to join Fernandes at the Rising Goans UK event, an important cultural gathering that brought together the heart of our Goan community. His presence there was not just symbolic—it was a clear message that the voices of Portuguese Goans are finally being heard.

This campaign is not built on fleeting appearances or shallow promises. It is built on proximity, on presence, on shared values. It is about listening to the frustrations and hopes of our people, honouring their cultural identity, and addressing their real concerns.

Fernandes came not simply to campaign, but to connect—to truly understand what it means to be Portuguese in a land far from home.

A special tribute must be made to the Goan Chaplaincy UK, whose vital role in supporting the spiritual and social lives of the Goan community cannot be overstated.

Under the pastoral leadership of Fr Renato Andrade, the Goan Chaplaincy has become a cornerstone of continuity, unity, and cultural pride for generations of Goans living in the UK. Their tireless work, alongside organisations like Rising Goans UK, makes it possible for these moments of connection and recognition to take place.

Two weeks ago, we saw that recognition take physical form. Fernandes witnessed first-hand how deeply rooted Portuguese culture still is in the Goan community. From our language and faith to our customs and food, the legacy of Portugal endures—and it deserves to be valued, celebrated, and supported by the institutions of our homeland.

Key pledges were made that could redefine the relationship between Portugal and its diaspora. These include simplifying the nationalisation process for descendants of Portuguese citizens, promoting Portuguese language education abroad, protecting vulnerable individuals from administrative exploitation, and modernising participation through electronic voting.

For too long, many in our community have felt disconnected from the very country they proudly call their own. This campaign is about changing that.

As a representative of the Portuguese government, I can say confidently that the Aliança Democrática is the only coalition truly prioritising the needs of our global communities. It is about offering equal opportunities to those abroad—not as afterthoughts, but as integral parts of the Portuguese nation.

We owe thanks to all who made the event possible, particularly Fr Renato Andrade, the Goan Chaplaincy UK, and the Rising Goans UK team. Their ongoing efforts ensure that culture, heritage, and civic engagement continue to thrive across generations.

As we approach the elections on May 18, I urge every Portuguese citizen in the UK, especially our cherished Goan community: vote for the future you want to see. Vote for recognition, for representation, for respect. Vote Aliança Democrática (PPD/PSD–CDS/PP). Tumi Portuguese election vote galcho. Dev Borem Korum tumkam.

Let us rise together—for Portugal, and for every community that calls it home.
