There may be no solution for the traffic congestion inMargao but government agencies do not seem to tire of making promises abouteasing the situation.
Once again the multi-storey parking project is in the newswith Francis D’Souza, Urban Development Minister promising that themulti-storey parking project will be funded by GSUDA.
“ GSUDA has the funds at the moment. But the Margaomunicipality has to clear all the hurdles and carry out land acquisition. Allfinancial assistance will be provided by the UD Ministry but the onus is on themunicipality” stated Francis on his trip to Margao.
GSUDA Vice-chairman and former Fatorda MLA Damu Naik pointedout that three multi-storey parking projects will be taken up by the GSUDA, oneat the old tempo-stand, another at the old fish market opposite the Margaomunicipality and the third one at the Old Bus stand opposite the policestation. But each of the three place identified requires land transfers.
“The land at the Old Tempo stand belonged to the TCP and wastransferred to the Housing Board Corporation during in the tenure of the lastgovernment. For the book of records this land needs to be given to themunicipality and then the MMC will have to issue an NOC to GSUDA, followingwhich a consultant will be appointed to study the feasibility and plans formulti-storey” stated Naik.
“We have a plan for a sky walk from Grace church to StateBank of India besides the multi-storey parking. We have even taken a resolutionon the same and since we no finance, the projects have been given to GSUDA, stated MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva.
“The multi-storey parking is a good option but that alonewon’t solve the parking woes of Margao. MMC needs to implement a compulsory stiltparking for all buildings and also rid all of all vehicles along the road butthe delays in the multi-storey project has been taking too long,” stated Margaoresident Jose Maria Miranda.
Naik clarified that the GSUDA is yet to ascertain the costof the three projects, but nothing can be done till land transfers take place.
