Local MLA, Babu Kavlekar’s writ runs large in QuepemMunicipal Council.
Any work to be undertaken in the municipality has to havethe stamp of the local MLA. Approvals to certain works are stalled if they arenot approved by the local MLA, sources said.
Soon after the assembly election a no confidence motion wasmoved against chairperson, Manuel Colaco of Quepem Municipal Council and within15 days he was replaced by a new chairperson.
The only sin Manuel committed was to contest the assemblyelection against Congress MLA, Babu Kavlekar.
“I did nothing wrong in contesting the elections. But soonafter the polls Babu’s supporters moved a no-confidence motion against me andsaw that I was over thrown,” Manuel said.
Manuel Colaco is now replaced by Babu’s close aide, DayeshNaik as chairperson.
Quepem is one of the few municipalities in the South to haveits own garbage treatment plant.
“We have utilized tax revenues to repair, renovate andreconstruct municipality-owned buildings besides complying with the orders ofthe Collector to install traffic sign boards for free-flow of traffic keepingmining traffic in mind,” former chairperson, Manuel Colaco said.
Quepem municipality does not have a full-fledged ChiefOfficer and therefore a lot of works remain pending for long time.
The council takes long time to issue of Birth and Deathcertificates inconveniencing the locals.
Quepem chairperson Dayesh Naik while crediting Babu Kavlekarfor development pointed out that the municipality has constructed a newbuilding of two floors including a press room for media persons besides a 21,000sq mtrs garbage treatment plant at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
Dyesh pointed out that the municipality will also beinaugurating the new fish market complex at Tilamol besides renovating thegarden square at Quepem market.
