Cumbarjua politician, three others arrested for assault

Property dispute, noise plaint angles probed

MAPUSA

Prominent businessman and politician Rohan Harmalkar from Cumbarjua, along with three others, was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill a Haryana native.

The incident occurred late Sunday night in Arpora. According to the Anjuna Police, the complainant, Surender Kumar Singh, serves as the caretaker of a property adjacent to Harmalkar’s.

The altercation reportedly began when Singh confronted individuals riding motorcycles and creating noise on Harmalkar’s property.

Sources, however, suggest that the incident may have stemmed from an ongoing property dispute between the two parties.

Police stated that Harmalkar’s caretaker, Durgadas Morajkar, informed him about Singh’s complaint regarding the noise.

This prompted Harmalkar, accompanied by Morajkar and around 10 others, to confront Singh.

During the encounter, Singh was allegedly slapped and punched, resulting in serious injuries, including damage to his left eye.

Singh also claimed that he was abused and threatened with death during the altercation.

Following the incident, Anjuna Police arrested Harmalkar, his caretaker Morajkar, and two others involved in the attack. A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 118, 352, 351(2) r/w 190 of the BNS Act, 2023.

All the alleged accused are presently behind bars.

Police are investigating the incident to determine whether it was motivated by a property dispute or arose from the noise complaint. Further action is expected as the case unfolds.
